Vijay Keshav Gokhale, a 1981-batch officer of the Indian Foreign Service, will succeed S Jaishankar as India’s next foreign secretary, a government statement said on Monday. Gokhale is currently serving as secretary, economic relations, in the external affairs ministry.
He will take over once Jaishankar’s extended term ends on January 28. Gokhale will be the third foreign secretary to serve the Modi-led government.
Jaishankar, a 1977-batch IFS officer, was appointed as foreign secretary on January 29, 2015, before then-incumbent Sujatha Singh completed her term.
