Karni Sena accepts Padmaavat glorifies Rajput valour, withdraws protest

After more than a year of launching massive protests against Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmavati, later christened Padmaavat, for allegedly distorting history, Karni Sena announced on Friday that it decided to take back its protest and accepted that the movie glorifies the valour of the Rajputs.

The protests started in January 2016 when Bhansali was assaulted on the sets of the film in Jaipur as the members of the fringe group claimed that the film has a romantic sequence between Deepika Padukone’s Padmini and Ranveer Singh’s Alauddin Khilji. Despite the filmmaker’s denial that no such scene exists, the protests continued in many states across India and came to a head around film’s release. Padukone and Bhansali also faced death threats .

Five major modifications needed in Padmavati including name of the movie- Censor board

The censor board on Saturday said it would clear controversial Bollywood film Padmavati after suggesting five major modifications, including changing the title to Padmavat, but the move failed to pacify Rajput groups that allege the movie distorts history.

A fringe group warned of vandalising cinema halls if the ~150crore movie was released and Vishvaraj Singh, a descendent of the royal family of Mewar, called the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) “ignoble and unprofessional”.

Latin America is world’s most violent region for women: UN

Latin America and the Caribbean is the most violent region in the world for women, the United Nations said Wednesday, highlighting Central America and Mexico as particularly dangerous.

In a report presented in Panama, UN Women and the UN Development Programme (UNDP) found assaults on women persisted in the region despite severe laws aimed at curbing the phenomenon.

“The issue of violence against women in Latin America is critical. It’s the most violent region in the world against women outside of conflict contexts,” Eugenia Piza-Lopez, head of UNDP’s gender mission in Latin America, told AFP. Continue reading

Clashes in U.P. after RSS worker/Journalist shot dead

 LUCKNOW: A Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) worker, who was also associated with the BJP , was shot dead in Uttar Pradesh’s Ghazipur district on Saturday morning, triggering violence in the area.

Police said around 7 am two bike-borne men pumped six bullets into Rajesh Mishra (35) at his construction-material shop at Bramhapura village. He died on the spot.
