Failing to follow these norms will mean that colleges will have to pay a fine — the amount being twice the total fee collected per student.

Not only this, the AICTE can also suspend approval for NRI and supernumerary seats given to any institution for one academic year.

Pune will become a smart city soon with the help of Artificial Intelligence

TORONTO : Artificial intelligence (AI) will be deployed as part of a collaboration involving the University of Toronto and IIT-Bombay to make Pune a smart city. This will be among the first of the projects to be tackled under a recent memorandum of understanding signed by the Pune Smart City Development Corporation Ltd, IIT-Bombay and University of Toronto (UofT).

NEWDELHI: Expect more girls to get into top engineering colleges across the country from the next academic year on 2018-19.

After IITs, 31 National Institutes of Technology (NITs) and the Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur (IIEST) will allocate special supernumerary seats for female candidates. The move is likely to provide equitable access to girls in the top-ranked NITs. Continue reading

India presses Microsoft for Windows discount

MUMBAI: India is pressing Microsoft Corp to offer a sharply discounted one-time deal to the more than 50 million Windows users in the country so that they can upgrade to the latest Windows 10 operating system in the wake of ransomware attacks. Microsoft officials in India have “in principle agreed” to the request, Gulshan Rai, India’s cyber security coordinator, told Reuters over the phone on Friday. A spokeswoman for Microsoft in India declined to comment on the matter. Officials at the company’s headquarters in the US and regional headquarters in Asia also declined to comment.

Massive cyberattack targets Europe, US; India not affected

MOSCOW/KIEV: A ransomware attack hit computers across the world on Tuesday, taking out servers at Russia’s biggest oil company, disrupting operations at Ukrainian banks, and other multinational firms.

Cyber security experts said those behind the attack, dubbed GoldenEye, appeared to have exploited the same tool used in the WannaCry hack. India’s cyber security agency chief Sanjay Bahl said the country had not been affected.

US Muslim group launches cellphone app to report hate crimes

Hoping to get an accurate count of anti-Muslim hate crimes in the United States, the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) on Friday launched a mobile app allowing victims to report bias incidents.

The group launched its Making Democracy Work for Everyone app a month after it reported a 44 percent surge in the number of hate crimes reported by U.S. Muslims last year. Concerned that the 260 hate crimes CAIR learnt of last year represent just a fraction of the actual total, the group intends the app to increase reporting. Continue reading
