15-year-old commits suicide after being forced to marry his elder brother’s widow

GAYA: A 15-year-old boy committed suicide two hours after he was forced to marry his brother’s widow, 10 years older than him, in south Bihar’s Gaya.

The wedding, solemnised on Monday at Vinoba Nagar village under Paraiya police station, about 15 km west of Gaya, flies in the face of a campaign by the Nitish Kumar government to end the practices of child marriage and dowry in the state.

Police said Mahadev Das, a Class 9 student of the government high school in Paraiya, married 25-year-old Ruby Devi, the widow of his elder brother Santosh and mother of his two children, as his father came under pressure from relatives and villagers. Continue reading

Body of Jamia student found with a gunshot wound in his car

NEW DELHI: The body of a 20-year old student from Jamia Millia Islamia, was found with a gunshot wound in his car parked inside a gated government colony in south Delhi’s Sarojini Nagar on Tuesday.

The family of the student, Rizwan Khan, said he was a national level hockey player.

While DCP (south) Romil Baaniya said prima facie it appeared to be a case of suicide, Khan’s family said they suspected foul play as the body was found in the same neighbourhood where his female friend, also a hockey player, lives.

Get reward of rs.10 lakh for giving info on missing JNU student Najeeb – CBI

NEW DELHI: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Thursday announced rs.10 lakh reward for anyone who could give information on Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student Najeeb Ahmed. Najeeb, a biotechnology student at JNU, went missing from his hostel on October 16, 2016 after an alleged confrontation with student members of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), a body affiliated to Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). “The information regarding Shri Najeeb Ahmed can be given to the CBI over telephone/mobile Nos. 24368641, 24368638, 24368634, 9650394796 and 9650394791,” the CBI said in a statement issued on Thursday. With the Delhi Police failing to find her son, Fatima approached the Delhi high court demanding a CBI probe. On May 16, a bench of Justices GS Sistani and Rekha Palli handed over the investigation to the CBI with the direction that it has to be monitored by an officer not less than the rank of DIG.
