Karni Sena accepts Padmaavat glorifies Rajput valour, withdraws protest

After more than a year of launching massive protests against Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmavati, later christened Padmaavat, for allegedly distorting history, Karni Sena announced on Friday that it decided to take back its protest and accepted that the movie glorifies the valour of the Rajputs.

The protests started in January 2016 when Bhansali was assaulted on the sets of the film in Jaipur as the members of the fringe group claimed that the film has a romantic sequence between Deepika Padukone’s Padmini and Ranveer Singh’s Alauddin Khilji. Despite the filmmaker’s denial that no such scene exists, the protests continued in many states across India and came to a head around film’s release. Padukone and Bhansali also faced death threats .

Padmaavat release: Ahmedabad malls vandalised, vehicles set on fire; Section 144 in Gurgaon

Violence and arson hit Ahmedabad on Tuesday night shortly after a candle march by Karni Sena activists against the January 25 release of controversial Bollywood film Padmaavat.

More than 150 four-wheelers and two-wheelers were damaged as mobs went on the rampage after 8pm, targeting three malls with multiplexes and a standalone theatre complex in the western part of the city.

Karni Sena’s Gujarat unit chief Raj Shekhwat said their activists had nothing to do with the vandalism. “The violence is condemnable. Karni Sena is not involved in the incidents,” he added.

Five major modifications needed in Padmavati including name of the movie- Censor board

The censor board on Saturday said it would clear controversial Bollywood film Padmavati after suggesting five major modifications, including changing the title to Padmavat, but the move failed to pacify Rajput groups that allege the movie distorts history.

A fringe group warned of vandalising cinema halls if the ~150crore movie was released and Vishvaraj Singh, a descendent of the royal family of Mewar, called the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) “ignoble and unprofessional”.
