Govt. setting up a web portal to track NRI marriages

NEW DELHI: The ministry for Women and Child Development is setting up a website on which registrars from states across the country will have to upload details related to NRI marriages, in a move aimed at tacking the issue of NRI husbands abandoning or ill-treating their wives, sometimes abandoning them in India soon after marriage.

Latin America is world’s most violent region for women: UN

Latin America and the Caribbean is the most violent region in the world for women, the United Nations said Wednesday, highlighting Central America and Mexico as particularly dangerous.

In a report presented in Panama, UN Women and the UN Development Programme (UNDP) found assaults on women persisted in the region despite severe laws aimed at curbing the phenomenon.

“The issue of violence against women in Latin America is critical. It’s the most violent region in the world against women outside of conflict contexts,” Eugenia Piza-Lopez, head of UNDP’s gender mission in Latin America, told AFP. Continue reading

Laws set for a rejig as govt readies new policy for women

NEW DELHI: The government should change laws to ensure time-bound disposal of matrimonial disputes, make education free for girls of poor families and provide better facilities for working women, a final draft of the National Policy for Women has suggested.

The Union women and child development ministry has sent the proposed policy to the Cabinet for approval. The new policy will guide government action on improving the lot of women over the next 15-20 years.

The proposed policy takes into account suggestions made by a Group of Ministers (GoM) headed by foreign minister Sushma Swaraj in May. Proposals from an earlier draft that have been retained included lower income tax for single women, mandatory registration of marriages and greater participation of women in work force.

Will do everything required for safety of Indians in Qatar: Sushma Swaraj

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on Saturday said the government would do everything possible for the safety and well-being of Indians in Qatar which has been battling economic sanctions from a number of Arab countries.
