Haryana shamed: 10-year-old brutalised, 11-year-old gang-raped

Four rapes, mostly of minors, in the last four days in Haryana have raised serious questions about women’s safety in the northern state.

The assaults on women and girls — and mutilation of their private parts, in some cases — remind of the brutal gang rape and murder of a physiotherapy student in Delhi in December 2016 that led to a huge uproar across the country. Delhi was then called the rape capital of the country.

For Haryana, which has been known for a very poor sex ratio, the incidents come at a time when the Manohar Lal Khattar-led BJP government announced that the number of girls born in the state had touched an all-time high of 914 per 1,000 boys in 2017. Continue reading

Hindus not a minority in Jammu & Kashmir : State govt tells SC

Jammu and Kashmir does not acknowledge Hindus as a “minority” in the state as it goes by the Centre’s national list of minorities, according to an affidavit filed by the PDP-BJP coalition government in the Supreme Court last week.

The state government told the top court that benefits of Central schemes would only be extended to “meritorious” and “needy” members of those communities that are notified by the Centre, suggesting that members of the Hindu committee would not be eligible.

The J&K affidavit referred to a Central government notification of 1993 that lists Muslims as a minority. The other minority groups, as per the document, are Sikhs, Christians, Buddhists and Zoroastrians. In 2014, the Jain community was added to this list. Continue reading

Gurmeet Ram Rahim could face Life term

NEWDELHI/CHANDIGARH: Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh faces the prospects of harsher punishment on Monday as he has been separately convicted of raping two women, thus making him a ‘repeat offender’.

36 Trains cancelled till 28th August and Delhi- Cgarh flights are on Huge hike

CHANDIGARH: A day after violence in Panchkula following the verdict against Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, private airlines hiked their fares 15-20 times, burning a hole in many pockets.

Since the past five days, the airlines were charging anywhere between ₹9,000-₹15,000 for the one-hour flight between Chandigarh and Delhi as against a fare of ₹2,000-₹3,000 on normal days.

Flood risk is on Punjab, as Beas and Sutlej River’s water level rise

TARNTARAN:  In the Mand area of the district, 10,000 acre crop has been submerged with the rise in the water level of the Beas and Sutlej rivers.

With heavy rain predicted in the coming days, high flood risk looms large over another 20,000 acres of agricultural land and houses in 62 villages in the area.
