Maldivian President Abdulla Yameen has declared a 15-day state of emergency, his aide Azima Shukoor announced on state television Monday.
The move gives sweeping powers to security forces to arrest and detain suspects, and comes amid a deepening political crisis in the Indian Ocean nation as Yameen refuses to comply with a Supreme Court order to release political prisoners.
The president has refused to comply with a court order to Continue reading

In a controversial remark, a BJP MLA from this district has said that once India becomes a “Hindu rashtra”, only those Muslims will stay in the country who assimilate into the Hindu culture.
“There are a very few Muslims who are patriotic. Once India becomes a Hindu rashtra (Hindu nation), Muslims who assimilate into our culture will stay in India. Those who will not are free to take asylum in any other country,” Bairia MLA Surendra Singh told reporters here last night.
He also claimed that by 2024, India would become a Hindu nation.
Describing Prime Minister Narendra Modi as an “avatar purush” (reincarnation of a deity), Singh said, “As the RSS completes 100 years in 2025, by 2024, India will become a Hindu rashtra. By the grace of god, India is going to be a global superpower thanks to the leadership of Modi and Continue reading

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan government has requested a court in Islamabad not to consider the plea for registration by Milli Muslim League, a newly formed party backed by Mumbai terror attack mastermind Hafiz Saeed.
The government said the group would breed violence and extremism in politics.
Earlier this year, a four-member bench headed by the chief election commissioner had said the process of registration of MML as political party could not be completed without security clearance from the interior ministry. The decision was based on the ministry’s directions that the MML not be allowed to register as a political party owing to its links with Jamaat-ut-Dawah, a proscribed terrorist organisation.
But Continue reading

Ahead of the counting of votes in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh on Monday, Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) were in a huddle to discuss possible scenarios the declaration of results would deliver in the politically crucial home state of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Most exit polls have predicted a comfortable victory for the BJP in the elections for 182-member Gujarat assembly but the Congress insists that the result will be “surprising” for pollsters.
In Gujarat, the BJP wound up its election office in a swanky mall on the outskirts of Gandhi nagar and held a meeting of all its candidates and polling agents.
As Congress leaders alleged tampering of electronic voting machines (EVMs), Continue reading

NEWDELHI: The Supreme Court on Wednesday gave the Centre six weeks to come up with a scheme for setting up special courts for speedy trial of lawmakers or politicians facing criminal charges, saying “this is in the interest of the nation”.
The court also sought the status of the 1,581 criminal cases mentioned in poll affidavits by the candidates in 2014, when elections were held for the Lok Sabha and eight state assemblies.
“In the interest of the nation, trials in such cases must end within a year,” a bench led by justice Ranjan Gogoi said, asking the Centre to specify the money it would set aside for such courts.
