Medical advisory to doctors soon on when to pull plug on life support

India’s apex medical research organisation will notify next month the conditions under which doctors can withdraw life-sustaining treatment for terminally ill patients.

Once notified, the Indian Council of Medical Research’s (ICMR) new glossary will become a reference point for doctors in determining limitation of treatment and providing palliative care at end of life.

“The draft definitions are being reviewed before getting approved and notified in January,” said Dr Roli Mathur, who is supervising the project.

Mumbai wakes up to smog, air quality worst since Diwali

MUMBAI: The city woke up to a thick blanket of haze on Saturday as pollution levels rose and visibility dropped, delaying local trains, flights and slowing down traffic on highways.

According to the weather bureau, the haze during early hours of the morning was fog and later, with the increase in pollutants getting suspended into the air, it intensified and turned into smog.

The pollution levels, measured by the air quality index (AQI), rose sharply, making Saturday the most polluted day in the city since Diwali this year. The city had witnessed a thick cover of smog on Friday too. Continue reading

Sushma Swaraj arranges visa for ailing Pak toddler

Noida: A Month after India said it will consider medical visas for Pakistani Patients if the application is backed by the country’s foreign affairs adviser Sartaj Aziz, external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj cut the red tape to help a Pakistani infant. Four month old Rohaan, a congenital heart patient, and his family have been granted visas for his surgery at Jaypee Hospital in Noida. The doctors at Jaypee have confirmed that the family will arrive on Monday.
