Hindus not a minority in Jammu & Kashmir : State govt tells SC

Jammu and Kashmir does not acknowledge Hindus as a “minority” in the state as it goes by the Centre’s national list of minorities, according to an affidavit filed by the PDP-BJP coalition government in the Supreme Court last week.

The state government told the top court that benefits of Central schemes would only be extended to “meritorious” and “needy” members of those communities that are notified by the Centre, suggesting that members of the Hindu committee would not be eligible.

The J&K affidavit referred to a Central government notification of 1993 that lists Muslims as a minority. The other minority groups, as per the document, are Sikhs, Christians, Buddhists and Zoroastrians. In 2014, the Jain community was added to this list. Continue reading

A Footballer who joined Lashkar-E-Taiba back

AWANTIPORA: A 20-year-old Kashmiri man who had joined the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) militant group surrendered after his mother launched a tearful appeal to him to return in a video widely shared on social media, police said on Friday.

A resident of Anantnag in south Kashmir, Majid Khan was a bright student and a popular goalkeeper before he became LeT’s latest recruit in the Valley last week, triggering grief among family members and neighbours.

Khan, dressed in a black pheran (a traditional Kashmiri overcoat) and a skull cap, was presented before the media at army headquarters here in south Kashmir. He reportedly took up arms after a close friend was killed in a shootout with security forces this year. Continue reading

TWO MILITANTS HOLED UP IN J&K SCHOOL KILLED AFTER 14 HOURS

SRINAGAR: Security forces gunned down two militants holed up in a school on the outskirts of Srinagar on Sunday, ending a 14-hour encounter in which a couple of soldiers were also injured.

Jammu and Kashmir director general of police SP Vaid confirmed the militant deaths that evening. Both the soldiers are reportedly out of danger.

The encounter began after two militants opened fire at a roadopening party passing through Pantha Chowk, killing a CRPF sub-inspector and injuring a jawan, on Saturday evening. The attackers then fled into the Delhi Public School building.
