China’s Alibaba launched a low cost voice assistant

BEIJING: China’s Alibaba Group launched on Wednesday a voice assistant speaker, similar to Amazon.com Inc’s “Echo”, its first foray into artificially intelligent home devices. The “Tmall Genie”, named after the company’s e-commerce platform Tmall, costs 499 yuan ($73.42), significantly less than western counterparts by Amazon and Alphabet Inc’s Google, which range from $120 to $180. BRUSSELS: European Union anti trust regulators hit Alphabet unit Google with a record 2.42-billion-euro ($2.7 billion) fine on Tuesday for illegally favouring its own online shopping service in its search results.

The move indicates the European regulators will likely take a tough line with the Silicon Valley giant in two other ongoing cases.

The EU said the world’s most popular internet search engine has 90 days to stop favouring its own shopping service or face a further penalty of up to 5% of Alphabet’s average daily global turnover.

Facebook accidentally ‘leaked’ moderators’ identities to potential terrorists


San Francisco, June 17 :  A security glitch at Facebook has put the lives of its over 1,000 content moderators at risk by accidentally leaking their identities to suspected terrorists’ accounts on the social media platform.
According to a report in The Guardian on Friday, the security lapse that was identified in November 2016 has affected more than 1,000 workers across 22 departments at Facebook who used the company’s moderation software to review and remove inappropriate content, including sexual material, hate speech and terrorist propaganda.
