Rajasthan records 374 H1N1 cases, 24 deaths in 2 weeks

The New Year has begun with a health alert for Rajasthan, which is facing it’s worst ever outbreak of swine flu (H1N1) that has sickened 374 people and caused 24 deaths in a little over two weeks.

Till January 9, Rajasthan had reported 195 cases and 7 deaths, but cases have almost doubled since then. Updated data from the state, likely to be added up by next week, will push up the national numbers from the current 220 cases and 10 deaths.

In 2017, India witnessed 85 H1NI cases and five deaths in the corresponding period, with the year ending with 38,810 cases and 2,264 deaths.

Couple with no children writes to President to allow ‘active euthanasia’

An elderly couple from Thakurdwar, near Charni Road, has written to the President’s office, seeking permission for “active euthanasia”, where a person is killed, usually by administering an overdose of pain-killers.

Operations, Surgeries under torchlight at UP hospital

KANPUR: At least 32 people in Uttar Pradesh’s Unnao were operated for cataract at a government hospital under torchlight on Monday night, prompting authorities to transfer the district’s top health official and suspend a doctor for negligence and violation of norms.

The surgeries were conducted under the light of two torches at the primary healthcare centre (PHC) in Nawabganj, which like many rural areas of Uttar Pradesh gets electricity for only 12 hours a day.

Mumbai wakes up to smog, air quality worst since Diwali

MUMBAI: The city woke up to a thick blanket of haze on Saturday as pollution levels rose and visibility dropped, delaying local trains, flights and slowing down traffic on highways.

According to the weather bureau, the haze during early hours of the morning was fog and later, with the increase in pollutants getting suspended into the air, it intensified and turned into smog.

The pollution levels, measured by the air quality index (AQI), rose sharply, making Saturday the most polluted day in the city since Diwali this year. The city had witnessed a thick cover of smog on Friday too. Continue reading
