Karni Sena accepts Padmaavat glorifies Rajput valour, withdraws protest

After more than a year of launching massive protests against Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmavati, later christened Padmaavat, for allegedly distorting history, Karni Sena announced on Friday that it decided to take back its protest and accepted that the movie glorifies the valour of the Rajputs.

The protests started in January 2016 when Bhansali was assaulted on the sets of the film in Jaipur as the members of the fringe group claimed that the film has a romantic sequence between Deepika Padukone’s Padmini and Ranveer Singh’s Alauddin Khilji. The CBFC agreed to clear Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmavati with a U/A certificate and asked the filmmakers to put in a disclaimer that the movie does not claim historical accuracy and does not in any way subscribe to or seek to glorify Jauhar — the banned practice of a Continue reading

Anarkali does not exist in history. Will they ban Mughal-e-Azam if released today: Rahul Rawail on Padmavati row

Film director and Panaroma Jury Head of the 48th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) Rahul Rawail expressed solidarity with the makers of Deepika Padukone-Ranveer Singh-starrer Padmavati.

Comparing the movie with the yesteryear classic, Mughal-e-Azam, which was also a variation of history, Rawail reasoned that Padmavati did not warrant protestation. “Anarkali is a completely fictitious character. Anarkali does not exist in history. If today Mughal-e-Azam is released, will they ban it? They will not,” Rawail said. Continue reading

After M.P., Gujarat also banned Padmavati

NEW DELHI/AHMEDABAD: Gujarat joined Madhya Pradesh in banning controversial Bollywood film Padmavati on Wednesday as the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) backed protesters and said it will tell filmmakers not to hurt Hindu sentiments.

Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani told reporters that his government would not allow Padmavati to be released because it hurt the sentiment of the Rajput community. “There are issues with the film, our sympathy is with those who are protesting against it…” he said. The decision was taken keeping in mind the law and order situation before elections next month in the state, he added. Continue reading
