lower court judges required to clear the backlog of cases

NEW DELHI: The Centre has asked the second national judicial pay commission, which was notified in November, to find out the number of lower court judges required to clear the backlog of cases.

The higher judiciary and the executive have been at variance over the exact strength of the subordinate judiciary. Currently, India has less than 22,000 sanctioned posts for judicial officers in the lower judiciary, of which nearly 5,000 are vacant.

Latin America is world’s most violent region for women: UN

Latin America and the Caribbean is the most violent region in the world for women, the United Nations said Wednesday, highlighting Central America and Mexico as particularly dangerous.

In a report presented in Panama, UN Women and the UN Development Programme (UNDP) found assaults on women persisted in the region despite severe laws aimed at curbing the phenomenon.

“The issue of violence against women in Latin America is critical. It’s the most violent region in the world against women outside of conflict contexts,” Eugenia Piza-Lopez, head of UNDP’s gender mission in Latin America, told AFP. Continue reading

Delhi Metro commuters can now register FIRs at 23 stations

NEWDELHI: Commuters who face harassment, stalking or theft in Delhi Metro will not have to go to police stations to lodge a complaint. The Delhi Police has issued an order, asking its staff to be present at their booths at 23 Metro stations and help passengers in filing complaints.

According to the order, police personnel will be present at the booths between 9am and 5pm. Once more staff is available, the facility will be extended roundthe-clock and across all Metro stations. The booths will also be provided computers so that e-FIRs can be filed.

Restaurant Owner’s wife shot in Rohini, hides son under seat of the car

NEW DELHI: A 34-year-old woman was shot dead in northwest Delhi’s Rohini on Wednesday, after the car she was travelling in with her restaurateur husband and two-year-old son was fired upon by assailants.

The victim, Priya Mehra, was on her way back from a gurudwara when the alleged attack took place on Wednesday , police said. The husband later told the police that the assailants had allegedly been sent by his financer to whom he owed Rs 40 lakh. Continue reading
