Mumbai wakes up to smog, air quality worst since Diwali

MUMBAI: The city woke up to a thick blanket of haze on Saturday as pollution levels rose and visibility dropped, delaying local trains, flights and slowing down traffic on highways.

According to the weather bureau, the haze during early hours of the morning was fog and later, with the increase in pollutants getting suspended into the air, it intensified and turned into smog.

The pollution levels, measured by the air quality index (AQI), rose sharply, making Saturday the most polluted day in the city since Diwali this year. The city had witnessed a thick cover of smog on Friday too. Continue reading

Implement the odd-even formula to reduce air pollution in the national capital.

NEW DELHI: The National Green Tribunal (NGT) asked the Delhi government on Wednesday to tell it within 24 hours if it would enforce the odd-even car rationing system with or without exemptions should the city’s air quality dip to severe again.

The tribunal’s order follows the government’s assurance to implement the odd-even formula to reduce air pollution in the national capital.

Now, pollution check is mandatory before renewal of insurance

NEWDELHI: The Supreme court ruled on Thursday – Vehicle owners in Delhi-NCR will have to mandatorily furnish a valid pollution-under control (PuC) certificate to renew their annual insurance papers.

A bench of justices MB Lokur and Deepak Gupta pronounced this order while hearing a case pertaining to rising air-pollution levels in the national capital. Continue reading
