‘TWO­ PLUS­ TWO’ TALKS BETWEEN INDIA AND US TO BEGIN IN APRIL

The first so-called twoplus-two dialogue between India and the US will be held in April, and Pakistan, Afghanistan, an alternative to China’s One Belt One Road (OBOR) plan, and arms purchases will be on the agenda, officials in Washington and New Delhi said.

According to the officials, none of whom wished to be identified, external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj and defence minister Nirmala Sitharaman will meet for a day with their counterparts in the US, secretary of state Rex Tillerson and defence secretary James Mattis on April 18 or April 19.

Washington is expected to confirm the date this week.

Pakistan moves court against Hafiz saeed party’s registration

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan government has requested a court in Islamabad not to consider the plea for registration by Milli Muslim League, a newly formed party backed by Mumbai terror attack mastermind Hafiz Saeed.

The government said the group would breed violence and extremism in politics.

Earlier this year, a four-member bench headed by the chief election commissioner had said the process of registration of MML as political party could not be completed without security clearance from the interior ministry. The decision was based on the ministry’s directions that the MML not be allowed to register as a political party owing to its links with Jamaat-ut-Dawah, a proscribed terrorist organisation.

UN votes 128­9 to declare US’s Jerusalem move null and void

WASHINGTON: The US faced complete isolation and humiliation in the UN General Assembly on Thursday as the world body took up for voting a draft resolution criticising President Donald Trump’s decision to recognise Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.

The General Assembly adopted the resolution with 128 countries voting in favour, nine against and 35 abstaining. Those who voted against Trump’s move also disregarded his threat of cutting aid to countries that backed the draft resolution and called out the US president for “bullying”.

FIFA says it has lifted Kuwait’s ban from international football. FIFA President Gianni Infantino is in Kuwait to confirm the government is no longer interfering in how the federation is being run. According to FIFA, “Kuwait Parliament has adopted a new sports law” which complies with its statutes. The ban was imposed in October 2015, leaving Kuwait unable to play its World Cup qualifiers.

SYDNEY : Australia became the 26th nation to legalise same-sex marriage on Thursday, prompting cheers and singing from a packed parliament public gallery in a country where some states ruled homosexual acts to be illegal until just 20 years ago.
