‘TWO­ PLUS­ TWO’ TALKS BETWEEN INDIA AND US TO BEGIN IN APRIL

The first so-called twoplus-two dialogue between India and the US will be held in April, and Pakistan, Afghanistan, an alternative to China’s One Belt One Road (OBOR) plan, and arms purchases will be on the agenda, officials in Washington and New Delhi said.

According to the officials, none of whom wished to be identified, external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj and defence minister Nirmala Sitharaman will meet for a day with their counterparts in the US, secretary of state Rex Tillerson and defence secretary James Mattis on April 18 or April 19.

Washington is expected to confirm the date this week.

Apple raises iPhone prices in India after hike in custom duty

Prices of top iPhone models have gone up by an average of 3.5%, except for iPhone SE which Apple Inc. assembles in India, after the Centre raised import duty on mobile phones by five percentage points on Friday.

When contacted, the company confirmed the change in prices, which are reflected on its website as well.

While the starting price of an iPhone 6 is up by ₹1,280 to ₹30,780, the most expensive iPhone X is dearer by ₹3,720 and will cost over ₹1.05 lakh. The cheapest iPhone 8 will now cost ₹66,120 instead of ₹64,000.

AICTE issues new norms for technical institutions- Must Read

Failing to follow these norms will mean that colleges will have to pay a fine — the amount being twice the total fee collected per student.

Not only this, the AICTE can also suspend approval for NRI and supernumerary seats given to any institution for one academic year.

Pune will become a smart city soon with the help of Artificial Intelligence

TORONTO : Artificial intelligence (AI) will be deployed as part of a collaboration involving the University of Toronto and IIT-Bombay to make Pune a smart city. This will be among the first of the projects to be tackled under a recent memorandum of understanding signed by the Pune Smart City Development Corporation Ltd, IIT-Bombay and University of Toronto (UofT).

Some Metro commuters could face jail, heavy fines

Riding in an intoxicated state, creating a scene or using abusive language inside the premises of a Metro network could lead to rs. 5,000 fine, according to sweeping changes proposed in the law to govern mass rapid-transit systems in India.

The Union housing and urban development ministry has sent the draft Metro Rail (Construction, Operation and Maintenance) Bill, 2017 to the law ministry for vetting, and it contains clauses that will overhaul not only rules and regulations for passengers but the way Metro projects are built and fares revised.

The bill also proposes stiff fines for staffers, who could be fined rs. 10,000 for general offences and rs. 30,000 and jail term of up to two years if their actions endangers passengers. Continue reading

PM Modi inaugurated Metro in Hyderabad

HYDERABAD: Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated on Tuesday the Hyderabad Metro Rail and took a ride along with Telangana chief minister K Chandrashekhar Rao on its maiden run.

The 30 km-long stretch has 24 stations covering several busy clusters and city landmarks, including the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium, Osmania University, Secunderabad Railway Station and major commercial hubs like Begumpet and Ameerpet.

Internet Neutrality in India – TRAI

NEWDELHI: India’s telecom regulator has backed an open and free internet, saying internet service providers cannot discriminate on how people access web content.

In its recommendations issued on Tuesday, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) upheld the concept of net neutrality and said no Internet Service Provider (ISP) can grant preferential data speeds or treatment to any web content.

“A licensee providing Internet Access Service shall not engage in any discriminatory treatment of content, including based on the sender or receiver, the protocols being used or the user equipment,” Trai said in its muchawaited recommendations.

The global debate over net neutrality revolves around whether ISPs should be treated like public utilities to ensure the internet is open and free, or be allowed to prioritise access to content of their choosing for an extra fee from websites and services.
