Ahead of the counting of votes in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh on Monday, Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) were in a huddle to discuss possible scenarios the declaration of results would deliver in the politically crucial home state of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Most exit polls have predicted a comfortable victory for the BJP in the elections for 182-member Gujarat assembly but the Congress insists that the result will be “surprising” for pollsters.
In Gujarat, the BJP wound up its election office in a swanky mall on the outskirts of Gandhi nagar and held a meeting of all its candidates and polling agents.

Top tennis official Anil Khanna has decided not to contest the election for the Indian Olympic Association president’s post even though the December 3 deadline for the withdrawal of his nomination papers has passed.
Khanna, a former All India Tennis Association chief, was in the fray for the president’s post along with International Hockey Federation president Narinder Batra.
But in a surprise move, Khanna has written to the IOA election commission, informing his decision to withdraw and support Batra for the president’s post in its elective AGM on December 14.
Khanna’s decision to withdraw will clear the decks for Batra to be elected as the IOA president. Batra will thus become one of a few sports administrators who heads a National Olympic Committee while holding the post of president of an important international federation.
