Taj Mahal second best UNESCO world heritage site after Angkor Wat

The Taj Mahal, India’s iconic ivory-white marble mausoleum in Agra, is the second best UNESCO world heritage site in the world, according to a new survey.

With over 8 million visitors per year, the monument of love built by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in the memory of his wife Mumtaz Mahal, is rated after Cambodia’s Angkor Wat.

Conducted by online travel portal TripAdvisor, the survey lists the UNESCO Cultural and Natural heritage sites best rated by travellers around the globe. Continue reading

CLEAN­UP Committee that sealed properties 10 years ago could be revived: SC

NEWDELHI: The Supreme Court on Wednesday said it could consider reviving its monitoring committee that had sealed thousands of illegal commercial establishments in Delhi a decade ago.

The top court also asked the Centre to respond to its proposal to restore the sealing powers to the monitoring committee, a move prompted by the failure of civic authorities to stop rampant unauthorised construction and misuse of residential premises.

“We cannot let Delhi go the way other cities are going and let it flood when there are heavy rains. Unauthorised construction takes a toll on the environment and affects sewage, parking and waste management,” a bench headed by Justice MB Lokur said.

Pune will become a smart city soon with the help of Artificial Intelligence

TORONTO : Artificial intelligence (AI) will be deployed as part of a collaboration involving the University of Toronto and IIT-Bombay to make Pune a smart city. This will be among the first of the projects to be tackled under a recent memorandum of understanding signed by the Pune Smart City Development Corporation Ltd, IIT-Bombay and University of Toronto (UofT).

PM Modi inaugurated Metro in Hyderabad

HYDERABAD: Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated on Tuesday the Hyderabad Metro Rail and took a ride along with Telangana chief minister K Chandrashekhar Rao on its maiden run.

The 30 km-long stretch has 24 stations covering several busy clusters and city landmarks, including the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium, Osmania University, Secunderabad Railway Station and major commercial hubs like Begumpet and Ameerpet.

The Union government has asked the Uttar Pradesh government to implead itself in the ongoing case in the Supreme Court regarding real estate developer Jaypee Infratech’s bankruptcy on the grounds that the real estate developer flouted the new Real Estate (Regulation and Development) Act — a move that could make life tougher for the already embattled firm.

India set to purchase  111 naval utility helicopters

NEWDELHI: India set to purchase  111 naval utility helicopters (NUHs) on Tuesday, with the defence ministry approving a ₹21,738-crore project to replace the Navy’s outdated fleet of French-designed Chetak choppers.

The government’s defence acquisition council (DAC), headed by defence minister Nirmala Sitharaman, has taken this decision at a time when the Navy is struggling to bridge capability gaps and a majority of its 140 war suppliers ships are operating without utility helicopters.
